Jane is a modern, all-in-one EHR platform designed to support solo therapists, group practices, and multidisciplinary clinics. It combines scheduling, charting, telehealth, intake, and billing into a single, well-integrated system that’s easy to navigate and consistently praised by clinicians for its usability and customer support. Whether you’re running a psychotherapy practice or offering a mix of health and wellness services, Jane offers the flexibility and structure needed to manage day-to-day operations without bouncing between tools.

Feature-wise, Jane delivers a lot out of the box. You’ll find a strong client portal, customizable intake forms, and an extensive shared template library with thousands of forms built by other professionals. Scheduling is clean and color-coded, with tools for shift management, waitlists, and multi-location setups. Payments and invoicing are tightly integrated, and the optional Claim.MD add-on streamlines insurance billing directly from within the platform. Telehealth is built in, HIPAA-compliant, and includes thoughtful touches like screen sharing, whiteboards, and picture-in-picture mode for notes.

Client Management

Jane makes it easy to manage clients from intake to scheduling. You can add clients manually or they can schedule appointments themselves with online booking. Intake forms are flexible and can be assigned to specific appointment types or providers. The form builder is intuitive and highly flexible; online booking policies can be adjusted per client or clinician so you can tailor exactly the way it behaves.

One major feature that Jane has, which seems to be popping up in more and more EHR systems, is the community template library, which includes over 5,000 psychology and 9,000 counseling-specific forms. These templates are community-created and easily sortable, allowing you to get your practice up and running quickly with minimal manual creation. The client portal is straightforward, with options for form completion, telehealth access, payments, and appointment management. Branding options and per-client time zone adjustments help create a consistent experience.

While most features are fully realized, the client messaging feature is still in beta, and SMS reminders are limited to 150 characters, which may be a drawback for family-focused providers. Regardless of that, Jane’s overall client management tools are strong and well-suited to solo practices while also being robust and flexible enough for large group practices as well.

Client Forms & Intake

Jane offers a strong intake system with a flexible form builder and thoughtful workflow options. Forms can be assigned to specific appointment types or providers, and clients are automatically prompted to complete them based on your rules. You can also trigger them manually as needed. Form sections cover demographic fields, insurance, credit card collection, and custom questionnaires, all in a clean, editable layout.

One thing that sets Jane apart is the size and accessibility of its shared template library. Providers can browse thousands of community-generated forms, including over 5,000 psychology-specific templates and 9,000 counseling forms. Templates are searchable, tagged by discipline, and show download counts, which makes it easy to find a solid starting point or inspiration for custom builds.

The form builder itself is easy to use, with drag-and-drop elements like text fields, checkboxes, scales, and dropdowns. While some advanced charting elements (like body diagrams or vitals) aren’t available in intake forms, this won’t be a limitation for most mental health workflows.

Calendar & Scheduling

Jane’s calendar is well-designed for both solo providers and larger teams. The interface is color-coded, responsive, and supports day and week views, with easy drag-to-book functionality. You can quickly add appointments, view client details, and adjust the calendar in just a few clicks.

Recurring appointments, waitlists, and staff shift scheduling are built in and easy to manage. Providers can block off breaks, view schedules by staff or location, and assign specific services to different time blocks. The system also supports multiple locations and practitioner roles, making it well-suited to group practices with more complex scheduling needs.

When it comes to shift management and coordinating large practices, I’ve not seen an EHR with a better calendar. Flexible rules for client self-scheduling, same-day booking, and other options allow you to tailor the calendar exactly to your practice’s needs in ways many EHRs completely overlook.

Jane earned full marks—5 out of 5 stars—in this section of our scoring criteria.

Treatment Planning & Notes

Jane’s notetaking system is easy to use and supports a range of common formats, including SOAP, DAP, and general progress notes. Notes are timestamped, lockable, and can include structured fields like dropdowns, checkboxes, and free text. The editor is clean and responsive, with enough flexibility to accommodate most therapist workflows.

Templates can be customized using Jane’s intuitive builder, and the platform includes a handful of mental health note types out of the box. What really fills in the gaps is the shared template library, which includes thousands of community-created templates across psychotherapy and counseling disciplines. This makes it easy to find a usable template for most needs, even if Jane’s native library is relatively small.

The treatment planning feature is functional but minimal. It allows you to assign a diagnosis and set an expected number of sessions, but doesn’t support tracking individual goals or clinical objectives. For therapists who rely on structured treatment planning or tools like Wiley notes, this may be a notable limitation.

AI Scribe, which is available as a paid upgrade, can generate note drafts based on transcripts of your sessions. While we didn’t test this tool in depth, it may help fill in documentation gaps for therapists who want faster charting.

Jane earned 4 out of 5 stars in this area of our scoring criteria. While it isn’t the most robust or fully featured documentation system I’ve ever seen, it’s quite customizable, as long as you don’t need deeply detailed treatment plans.

Telehealth

Jane’s built-in telehealth platform is included with all plans and integrates smoothly into the scheduling and client portal experience. Clients receive an automated invite by email, and sessions launch in-browser after a quick mic and camera check. The interface is modern, simple to navigate, and consistent with the rest of the Jane experience.

Features include in-call chat, HD video, screen sharing, whiteboard, breakout groups, background effects, and a picture-in-picture mode for viewing notes or the calendar during a call. These are features not always found in built-in EHR video tools, and they give Jane a meaningful edge for providers who want to keep everything in one place.

For group sessions, Jane supports up to 12 participants with a $15 per practitioner monthly add-on.

Based on our scoring criteria, Jane’s telehealth system earned 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Insurance Billing

Jane offers integrated insurance billing for U.S.-based practices through a partnership with Claim.MD. This add-on is available for an additional $20 monthly per provider on the Practice and Thrive plans. Once enabled, providers can manage the full revenue cycle, from eligibility checks to payment posting, within the Jane platform. Keep in mind, that you will have to maintain a separate subscription to Claim.MD which does add to the overall operation cost. Jane users receive 10% off Claim.MD subscriptions. The process is well thought out. Providers can collect insurance information during intake, upload insurance cards, and run eligibility checks directly from Jane. When charting, CPT and ICD-10 codes can be pulled directly into claims, and Claim.MD’s scrubbing tool helps reduce errors before submission. Claims can be submitted individually or in batches, and paper CMS-1500s can still be printed if needed.

Claim tracking is handled within Jane, including the ability to manage rejections and resubmit claims. Electronic remittance advice (ERA) files are imported automatically if you’re using Claim.MD, and Jane will apply payments accordingly. You can also upload ERA files manually from other clearinghouses if needed.

Based on our scoring criteria, Jane earned 4 out of 5 stars for insurance billing features.

Client Payment Methods, Collection, & Processing

Jane supports a wide range of payment workflows, including cash, credit card, sliding scales, and package-based billing. The platform’s built-in payment processor, Jane Payments (powered by Stripe), is available in the U.S., Canada, and the UK, and supports online, in-person, and card-on-file transactions. Providers can also accept tips, track gift cards, and manage product sales if needed.

Payment collection is well-integrated into both the provider and client experience. You can generate invoices, accept payments through secure links, and automate receipt delivery. For practices with multiple clinicians, Jane supports customizable billing settings, commission tracking, and shift-based reporting.

Sliding scale rates, late fees, and cancellation policies are easy to set up and enforce. You can also apply prepayments or create custom billing codes for bundled services or add-ons. If you prefer a third-party payment processor, Jane does not currently support other payment processors.

Overall, billing in Jane is smooth and well-suited for self-pay practices. While not built for complex financial reporting, it handles day-to-day transactions and reconciliations cleanly and quite well enough for just about any practice.

Practice Management & Reports

Jane includes a strong set of tools for managing staff, tracking activity, and monitoring clinic performance. Shift scheduling, staff permissions, and practitioner roles are easy to configure, which—like many of the other features we’ve covered—makes Jane particularly well-suited for group practices or multidisciplinary teams. Supervisory sign-offs, internal task assignments, and staff-specific billing settings are all supported.

Reporting in Jane covers the essentials: income tracking, accounts receivable, appointment counts, client retention, and payment summaries. You can filter most reports by staff, location, or date, and export them to CSV for external analysis. Time tracking and staff compensation reports are also available, which can be useful for payroll or revenue sharing setups.

Larger and multi-disciplinary practices are very well-served by the level of customization, staff management, and admin features available. We awarded Jane with 4.5 out of 5 stars in this section.

Customer Service & Training

Jane stands out for its customer support and training resources. Support is available by phone, email, and chat, with average response times often under two minutes. The support team gets consistent praise from users for being responsive, knowledgeable, and friendly, even during busy onboarding periods.

New users have access to live workshops, recorded webinars, and a detailed knowledge base. One-on-one setup calls are also available at no extra charge on the Balance, Practice, and Thrive plans. These sessions can help with everything from scheduling setup to intake forms and billing workflows. You don’t see white-glove customer support very often in EHRs anymore, so that could be very valuable for complex practices or those just needing a little extra technical help.

For ongoing training, Jane offers a mix of practical guides and feature-focused webinars. The platform is updated regularly, and new features are typically rolled out with clear documentation and optional early access through the “Workshops” area of the settings menu.

For its comprehensive approach, we awarded Jane with 5 out of 5 stars in the customer service and training category.

Cost & Pricing

Jane offers flexible, month-to-month pricing designed to scale with your practice. There are no contracts, and admin and support staff can use the system at no cost. While Jane is slightly more expensive than some entry-level platforms, it remains competitive for practices that need robust scheduling, documentation, and billing features. Discounts are available for nonprofits, new grads, and educational clinics. A live demo is available so you can preview the platform, though there is no actual free trial account available.

Jane’s per-license model allows you to scale flexibly, especially if you have part-time clinicians. Additional discounts and onboarding support are available for clinics with more than 10 licenses.

Jane also provides more robust support, better scalability for group practices, and a much larger community template library.
