TherapyDen is an online directory for those looking for an individual, couples, family, or group therapist. It offers a wide range of search filters, making it easy to find someone with unique, tailored care specifications. While it’s not as large as the biggest online directories, it’s quite easy to use, offering multiple ways of finding a therapist, including a map for finding someone in-person and a “5 best matches” feature.

TherapyDen is an online therapist directory for people looking for mental healthcare in their state. It offers search filters for both online and in-person therapy, and puts a focus on populations who may have had a harder time finding a therapist in the past, such as queer/trans and BIPOC folks.

I used all the different features and filters that the directory offers, and I found it to be quite simple to use, while at the same time offering multiple ways to start your search, including by type (individual, couples, etc), by location (with a map feature), or by specialty.

While TherapyDen could be a great way for many to find a therapist, it’s not an online therapy platform, so all therapy happens outside of the directory. For those looking for a one-stop mental healthcare shop, Grow Therapy could be a good fit. Additionally, TherapyDen has very few medication prescribers listed on its site. Grow Therapy offers both therapy and medication management, as do Brightside Health and Talkspace.

Detailed Review

TherapyDen was designed to be a simple, easy-to-use platform for folks looking to find a therapist. You can find your city and browse through all the providers, check a couple boxes to narrow your search a bit and be given your top five options, or use more advanced filters to get really specific with your search. We rated TherapyDen 4.5 out of 5 stars since it’s easy to use, includes a large number of therapists to choose from, and clearly lists each provider’s cost and insurance, specialties, and licensure.

TherapyDen’s Directory

At the top of the TherapyDen site is a search bar where you can fill in what specialty you’re looking for, your zip code, and your insurance. When you type those in and hit “search,” you’ll be given a list of the top five therapists that match your criteria. If you want more options, there’s a link under the search bar that says, “or, search by gender, ethnicity, cost and more.” Clicking this leads to either a map (if you’re looking for an in-person provider) or a list (if you’re looking for online therapy) with tons more filters at the top of the page, including specialized experience, a cost range you can adjust, and more filters like treatment techniques, language, gender, and familiarity with certain faiths.

While the directory is front and center of TherapyDen’s website, it also allows for other simple ways to navigate finding a therapist. Scroll down a bit on the home page and you’ll find a “services” section, which lists each type of service available on the directory, which lists Individual, Couples, Family, Child, Adolescent/Teen, Group, Medication Management, and Neuropsychological Assessment. When you click on one of these categories, a map loads with all the providers offering that service in your area. You can also select online providers and be given a list of the top five providers matching the service you chose originally.

Group Therapy

One of the “services” on the drop-down menu of the site is the “Group” option. This takes you to a page where you can select a topic, a meeting day, and input your zip code to find therapy groups near you. Many groups are offered online, making attendance much more feasible for many. Groups list their start and end dates, when applicable, as well as cost and potential insurance coverage.

When I input my zip code but left the other options blank, it loaded all the groups in my area, which included topics like “Navigating Disenfranchised Grief,” “Chronic Pain & Chronic Illness,” and “Healthy Relationships: Untangling Codependent Dynamics.” To request to join a group, you’re taken to the therapist’s profile to the messaging feature, where you can request to join a group or get more information.

Cost & Insurance

The TherapyDen directory is free to use for consumers looking for a therapist. Therapists on the site can get a free listing, or pay $30 monthly for premium features (this is what funds the platform—read our TherapyDen review for therapists here).

Each provider on the platform sets their own rates and clearly lists which, if any, insurance plans they accept. You need to scroll down a bit on the provider’s bio page to find this info, with the cash-pay rate in the “At A Glance” section and the insurance information listed directly above.

Who Does TherapyDen Serve?

TherapyDen is a free directory for anyone looking for mental health care within the US. It lists individual, couples, family, child, teen, and group therapy options, so people with diverse needs can likely find someone in the directory that suits their needs. Just like any directory, there will be more provider options in larger cities and metropolitan areas.

User Reviews

The only online reviews of TherapyDen are from therapists signing up to be listed in the directory. Some mention that they don’t get many leads from the platform, and others state that they’ve had issues with customer service.

Alternatives & Competitors

While TherapyDen could be a great way to find a therapist, it’s not your only option. Inclusive Therapists offers even more search filters, though may have fewer providers in certain areas, while Grow Therapy offers a full-service option for folks looking for one-stop care.

Inclusive Therapists - Best Directory for Queer Folks

Inclusive Therapists Logo
Rating:
Overall rating of 4 out of 5 possible.

Price: Varies by provider
Insurance Accepted: Yes
Therapy & Psychiatry: Yes

Inclusive Therapists is a directory similar to TherapyDen with the goal of helping people find therapists who are anti-oppressive and fit their specific identity needs. Users can sort by insurance, sliding scale rates, cultural knowledge, language spoken, provider’s identity, and much more. Just like on TherapyDen, each therapist on the platform sets their own rates and accepts different insurance plans, so be sure to include what you’re looking for there to find a good match.

If you don’t want to look through the full list yourself, Inclusive Therapists also offers a “Get Matched” service, in which you can fill out a relatively short form and see your top options based on your answers.

Price: Varies by provider

Therapy & Psychiatry: Yes

While TherapyDen is an online directory, Grow Therapy is a full-service online mental health platform, offering online therapy and medication management. Regardless, the process of finding a therapist on the platform is similar: search through Grow Therapy’s extensive directory to find the provider best suited for your needs, and filter by cost/insurance, provider identity, languages spoken, and more.

Then, you can book and attend sessions directly within Grow Therapy’s platform. The directory also includes the option to meet with a therapist in-person, or find providers who offer hybrid care. Either way, all the payment processing and insurance billing happens through Grow.

In My Experience

I’ve spent hundreds of hours researching, personally testing, and reviewing online therapy platforms and therapist directories. While TherapyDen doesn’t offer any specific services for me to test other than its directory, I spent several hours combing through its different search options and filters. TherapyDen earned 4.5 stars in my objective review, as it’s incredibly easy and intuitive to get started and find a provider who fits even very specific parameters (granted that person exists in your state).
