At a glance
  • As of mid-2026, BetterHelp accepts insurance from over 125 plans in all 50 states plus DC. Coverage is checked at signup, and the average copay is $23.
  • In 2024 and earlier BetterHelp did not accept any insurance, but in 2025 that changed, state by state.
  • Insurance is now optional. The $70 to $100 weekly self-pay subscription still exists, with messaging included.

BetterHelp is an online therapy platform, and for most of its history its relationship with insurance was simple: there was none. Its own FAQ once said it did not work with any insurance company. Then its parent company bought UpLift, an insurance-based mental health provider, and spent 2025 and 2026 wiring BetterHelp into insurance networks state by state. The change is recent, so every number below comes with its effective date.

Does BetterHelp accept insurance in 2026?

Yes. BetterHelp’s official site says it accepts major insurance plans. BetterHelp is in-network with 125+ insurance plans, and quotes the $23 average copay for eligible members. The site names the following carriers: Aetna, Cigna, Evernorth behavioral health plans, Optum, select UnitedHealthcare plans, Curative, and regional Blue Cross Blue Shield plans including Anthem, CareFirst, and Highmark. The other roughly 115 plans are unpublished. The in-signup insurance check verifies your plan and coverage.

The 2026 caveat is BetterHelp’s capacity. Teladoc told investors that even with 8,000+ credentialed professionals, demand for insurance-covered sessions has “outpaced available provider capacity,” 7. Practically, BetterHelp insurance coverage in 2026 means your plan may qualify while a covered therapist near your slot takes longer to appear. Availability varies by plan, provider network, therapist availability, and deductible status.

Did BetterHelp accept insurance in 2025?

For most of 2025, no. Insurance-covered care first went live in a single state as a soft launch in June 2025 4, and by the end of October 2025 it covered only 7 states plus DC. A reader who checked in March 2025, or from a non-launch state in November 2025, correctly found no insurance option.

The old model per a 2024 FAQ on the site said services “are generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid.”2 The mid-2025 launch retired that policy.

Do you need insurance for BetterHelp?

No. Insurance is an optional payment method. BetterHelp’s standard product is the self-pay subscription at $70 to $100 per week ($280 to $400 per 4-week cycle). This includes live sessions, messaging with your therapist, and in-app features like a digital journal. The signup flow offers a choice between using insurance or paying out of pocket where insurance is available.

Self-pay still keeps one advantage, messaging. The insurance path covers one live session per week with messaging not included, so members who lean on between-session messaging may prefer paying BetterHelp’s out-of-pocket cost for the full subscription. Cash payers can trim that cost with HSA/FSA cards, which BetterHelp accepts as an eligible medical expense with most providers. Other cost savings include financial aid for those who qualify (10% to 40% off per our financial aid guide) and 20% off the first month through our link.

BetterHelp cost with insurance vs out of pocket

  • With insurance: $23 average copay per covered weekly session. Your actual copay depends on your plan, network status, and deductible progress, so it can run higher or lower. BetterHelp’s tip is to check your member portal or call the number on your card for the exact figure.
  • Out of pocket: $70 to $100 per week, messaging included.
  • The traditional comparison: BetterHelp’s page says in-person therapy without insurance can cost $100 to $350 per session.

BetterHelp’s own decision guidance is to use insurance when your plan includes online therapy benefits, your deductible is low, and an in-network provider is available. Otherwise they recommend the cash subscription when you want faster access, flexibility, or your deductible has not been met. Many states have telehealth laws requiring insurers to cover online therapy at the same rate as in-person visits. Federal law generally requires mental health benefits to be covered comparably to medical benefits, per BetterHelp’s page.

How to check your coverage

  1. Start with BetterHelp signup and complete the short quiz.
  2. If insurance is available as a payment option, enter your insurance information. The cost and coverage for your plan will appear before you commit.
  3. If no insurance option appears, it may not be available for your state, plan, network, or therapist availability at that time. Existing members can sometimes switch to insurance later in account settings.

What BetterHelp insurance coverage does not include

Medicaid, Medicare, and TRICARE are still excluded. BetterHelp’s providers “do not directly accept” any of them, and the Medicaid exclusion includes Medi-Cal. Medicaid holders can use Grow Therapy or Rula, which accept Medicaid in many states. Medicare holders can look at Talkiatry (Original Medicare plus select Medicare Advantage plans), Grow Therapy, which accepts Medicare and Medicare Advantage with coverage varying by state (confirmed September 8, 2026), or Rula.

Reimbursement after paying cash is the other gap. Claiming a BetterHelp subscription back from an insurer requires out-of-network PPO-type benefits plus claim documentation. BetterHelp confirmed on September 11, 2026 that it does not provide superbills, though members can download invoices from their account settings. HMO plans generally do not cover out-of-network care outside emergencies. If insurance coverage matters to you, use the in-network path inside signup rather than planning on reimbursement afterwards.

Early user reports from the rollout

The 2026 shift shows up in member threads with rollout-era rough edges attached. Members having already met their yearly deductible report being auto-charged full session amounts even while insurance paid, with refunds taking multiple emails. Members not yet having met their deductible report insured session prices landing above the self-pay rate and support unable to explain the math. One member who mistyped insurance details at signup spent three days in templated-reply loops, because the phone line only takes messages. And a question asking how long insurance verification takes drew no answers at all, a measure of how young the program still is.

The takeaway: yes insurance is accepted, but your deductible status decides the price you experience early in the year, and the signup details deserve care the first time through.

No. The default product is the $70 to $100 weekly self-pay subscription. Insurance is an optional payment path where available.

Does BetterHelp take Medicare?

No. BetterHelp Medicare coverage does not exist. Its providers do not directly accept Medicare, Medicaid, or TRICARE. Talkiatry, Rula and Grow Therapy all work with Medicare options in many states.

Can I get reimbursed by my insurance for BetterHelp?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Unlikely. BetterHelp does not provide superbills (confirmed September 11, 2026), and HMOs rarely pay out-of-network. Members can download invoices from their account settings, but PPO out-of-network claims still need paperwork BetterHelp does not provide. Use the in-signup insurance check instead.

How much is BetterHelp with insurance?

Eligible members average a $23 copay per session, roughly $92 for a month of weekly sessions. Much cheaper than $280 to $400 per month for self-pay. Your plan sets your exact figure and our BetterHelp FAQ covers the billing mechanics.
