Rating of Alo Moves Yoga App

I have dedicated a considerable amount of time and attention personally using and reviewing each yoga app to ensure that consumers are getting the information they need to make confident purchases. I’m a trained yoga instructor and have been practicing and studying yoga for over 20 years, which has helped me identify the most important elements that should be available in each app. The Alo Moves app’s interface could benefit from some upgrades, especially with their filtration tool, but overall, the app shines in most areas. It has an amazing library of yoga classes and can be customized to target personal goals, leading it to score high in our Variety and Volume category and Personalization category.

Pros & Cons of Alo Moves Yoga App

Alo Moves has a variety of yoga and fitness classes, and it also encourages users to try mindfulness practices, like guided meditations and breathwork exercises. Alo Moves releases new classes every week and has curated playlists and video collections to help users stay committed to a program. Unfortunately, there’s no free content on their platform, but you can read titles in their library before you make a purchase.

Pros

  • 14-day free trial, a longer trial period than most yoga apps
  • Encourages mindfulness training alongside fitness, like meditation and breathwork
  • Releases new classes every week to keep workouts fresh
  • Has teacher series and curated playlists
  • Promotes member engagement with community message boards on class pages
  • Choose to play music in fitness classes
  • High-quality videos

Cons

  • No free content; videos are behind a paywall
  • Content may be intimidating for a beginner
  • Instead of choosing from personal Spotify or Apple Music libraries, the music tracks are picked by Alo, and you can only choose to turn them on or off
  • Lots of advertisements for Alo clothes and gear
  • No tutorials on yoga history or philosophy
  • Filter tool can be glitchy and difficult to navigate

You can sign up for Alo Moves on their website or download the Alo Moves app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

What Is Alo Moves?

Alo Moves is an easy-to-use app that offers yoga, fitness, and mindfulness training. You can find curated programs that match your level of yoga experience and classes that help you focus on a specific skill. Alo Moves costs $19.99 for a monthly subscription and $199.99 for an annual subscription. There is a 14-day free trial with the purchase of either membership option.

Alo Moves App Review 2022 - four images showing the main pages of the app

Alo Moves has yoga classes designed for entry level and moderate to advanced yogis. They offer multiple yoga styles (Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa) and other fitness classes, like barre, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), pilates, and strength training. When you first begin using the app, it’ll ask you about your goals, your interests, what yoga styles you’d like to try, and the teaching style you prefer. You’ll also answer questions about your level of experience in both yoga and mindfulness. This helps to build a solid personalized program, which is why Alo Moves earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in our Personalization category from our scoring criteria for yoga apps.

The home screen updates every day with new videos, recommended classes, and daily meditations. There’s a “My Practice” section that allows you to save favorite classes, series, and playlists. Series are multi-day programs including classes taught by the same instructor, and playlists are curated lists of classes with similar themes but different teachers. You can use the filter tool to search for specific classes by style, duration, intensity level, experience level, and teacher.

Alo Moves also allows members to target skills such as mobility, flexibility, inversions, or a specific yoga pose. When you choose what skill you’d like to work on, you’ll receive a list of yoga or fitness classes designed to help you build that particular skill or posture. In addition to working on skills, you can also set intentions, like improving your mood or calming the mind, and the app will provide a list of yoga and mindfulness classes to help you achieve that goal.

Who Is the Alo Moves Yoga App Right For?

Alo Moves is a great fit for those ready to commit to a yoga routine and learn through high-quality yoga videos. Alo Moves also does a wonderful job promoting mindfulness training, so it’s also a terrific app for anyone who wants to build a meditation practice and understand all the mental health benefits of exercise.

You’re Ready to Commit to a Yoga Routine

Alo Moves encourages users to participate in their yoga series and playlists. Series are multi-day yoga programs taught by the same instructor, and playlists are collections of classes with similar themes taught by different instructors. The series and playlist programs are a great way for users to build specific skills, challenge themselves, and commit to a yoga routine. There’s also a yoga pose library to help members learn to master specific postures.

You Want High-Quality Videos

Alo Moves yoga and fitness videos are all high-quality and filmed in incredible settings. Many include “Alo in the Wild,” which are videos filmed in places like the French Riviera, Egypt, Ibiza, and Yellowstone National Park. If you’re tired of watching yoga classes shot in empty studios, you’ll love Alo Moves’ videos with visually stunning backdrops.

You Want to Build a Mindfulness Practice

The mindfulness section on the Alo Moves has a substantial amount of tools that include breathwork, meditation, classes on personal growth, yoga nidra (yogic sleep) and  sound bath meditation, which are meditations that involve immersive experiences with resonating sounds, like wind chimes, ocean waves, and crystal alchemy singing bowls. Due to the plethora of mindfulness tools, Alo Moves earned a 4.5 out of 5 stars in our “Extra Resources and Features” category. It’s an excellent option for those who want to blend mental healthcare and mindfulness into their fitness routine.

Who May Want an Alternative to Alo Moves?

While Alo Moves is a terrific resource for building a yoga routine, some users may be looking for something different. You may want an alternative if you’re interested in educational classes that dive into the background of yoga history and philosophy. You may also want a different yoga app if you’re a true beginner who has never participated in a yoga class.

You Want More Educational Resources

Many people are surprised to learn that yoga is more than just postures and movement. Yoga history and philosophy can be fascinating topics to study, and many people can benefit from learning about the meaning of yoga while practicing it. If you’d like to add these educational components to your yoga practice, Gaia or Yoga International would be a better fit. They both have comprehensive educational resources that include collections of courses and articles on various yoga topics. To learn more about these alternatives, check out our Gaia yoga review and our Yoga International review.

You’re New to Yoga

Alo Moves has thousands of yoga and fitness videos, but not a clear or precise path for beginners. The entry level classes appear to be geared towards entry level users who have experienced yoga in the past, but may not be physically ready to master intermediate postures. True beginners may want to try the Yoga for Beginners | Mind Body app.

What Users Are Saying About the Alo Moves App

The Alo Moves app has 4.2 stars from 6.8K reviews in the Google Play Store, and 4.9 stars from 17.8K reviews in the Apple App Store. Both Android and Apple users shared positive reviews on the diversity of classes and the quality of the instruction. However, several reported glitches with the app and a poor user experience.

Diversity of Yoga Classes

Many Alo Moves reviewers praised the diverse yoga and fitness classes available. Members enjoy being able to switch up their daily workouts with different routines and find an array of classes that target specific skills. I was also impressed by the variety and the fact that Alo Moves releases new classes each week, which is why Alo Moves earned 5 out of 5 stars in our “Volume and Variety of Content” category on our scoring criteria.

Fantastic Teachers

The majority of the positive Alo Moves reviews mentioned the instructors. Many reviewers stated that they followed specific teachers on other platforms, like YouTube or Instagram, and joined Alo Moves to be able to take classes with those teachers. The teachers are very professional, motivating, and have extensive yoga and fitness backgrounds.

Wish It Was Better at Tracking Progress

Several reviewers mentioned that they loved the content but wished Alo Moves was better at tracking their progress. For instance, when you initially set goals in the onboarding process, it doesn’t ask you how many classes you’d like to complete each week or month. You can log completed classes on a community board, but no rewards or gamification techniques are used to measure how far your practice has come.

Poor User Experience and a Bit Glitchy

Multiple reviewers reported issues using the filter tool and found it difficult to search for specific classes. Many Android reviewers reported issues with videos freezing mid-class and music playing after they tried to turn it off. Several Apple users had issues casting screen-sharing features onto their TVs. While I didn’t personally experience any glitches or bugs, it did take me a bit longer than usual to figure out the filter tool to find preferred classes. Because of the reported glitches and limitations with the filter tool, Alo Moves received a 3.5 out of 5 stars in our “Interface Design and User Experience” category on our scoring criteria.

How Much Does an Alo Moves Yoga Subscription Cost?

Alo Moves costs $19.99 for a monthly subscription or $199.99 for an annual subscription and comes with a 14-day free trial with the purchase of either plan. There is no free content on Alo Moves, but you can look around the app and view its options before purchasing a subscription.

Alo Moves Yoga Subscription

Alo Moves offers two subscription plans, $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. There is a 14-day free trial with the purchase of either plan. 14-days is significantly longer than other yoga apps, which allows users to take their time using the app, find preferred classes, and test out their features before committing to a purchase.

Alo Moves Yoga Discounts

Alo Moves doesn’t currently offer discounts to yoga teachers, seniors, students, or other groups. However, they occasionally have promotional events where they offer discounts, member rewards, or prizes. For example, to celebrate September being National Yoga Month, they offer 30-day free trials for new members. Existing members who participate in an eight-class challenge will be entered to win $1,000.

Alo Moves Key Features

The Alo Moves yoga and fitness app provides an incredible variety of classes taught by experienced instructors. The app also has a substantial amount of content dedicated to mindfulness that includes guided meditations and breathwork. Alo Moves costs $19.99 monthly and $199.99 for an annual membership. Subscribers get a 14-day free trial by purchasing a monthly or yearly plan.

Yoga and Fitness Classes

While yoga is at the heart of the Alo Moves app, they also offer an outstanding fitness section with strength training, cardio, HIIT, barre, and pilates classes. Similar to other yoga apps like Glo and Gaia, new users are asked to take a survey when they create an account, which is intended to help the app personalize the experience. The survey asks questions about the user’s goals, interests, level of experience, and preferred teaching style. I completed the Alo Moves survey, but I don’t believe my experience was as personalized as other yoga apps. For instance, various fitness classes were suggested to me even though my survey answers focused on yoga.

I mainly relied on the filter tool to find my preferred classes, which can then be saved in the My Practice section. I was blown away by the variety of classes offered and the quality of the videos and instruction. I gravitated towards the “Alo in the Wild” videos that showcase yoga classes filmed in gorgeous settings. Watching a yoga class from a seaside in Croatia or a mountain top in Ibiza was a delightful change from your typical yoga studio backdrops.

One of the best Alo Moves features is their series and playlists, which are terrific options for those looking for a program to follow. If you like a particular teacher, you can follow one of their multi-day series. If you’re looking for classes targeting a specific body part or skill, you can find a playlist with a collection of classes with that theme. Following a series or playlist is helpful because you go to your mat knowing what you’re working on each day, without having to use the filter or dig through recommended classes.

Mindfulness Classes and Other Resources

Alo Moves has a noteworthy section of mindfulness classes that go beyond guided meditations. They offer sound baths, a wide range of breathwork, also known as pranayama, and classes that focus on personal growth. You can also find yoga nidra, which are yoga classes that prepare the mind and body for sleep.

Another valuable resource that Alo Moves offers is its collection of videos that focus on specific yoga poses. Some postures, also called asanas, can take years to master. I found it extremely helpful to have a library of videos that solely focus on how to execute yoga poses. They also have classes under the ‘How to Teach’ tab that helps yoga teachers learn how to provide verbal cues and safe alignment to students.

Community Features

Alo Moves allows users to log their participation on class community boards. When you finish a class, you have the option to log it, which places your name and optional comment at the top of the class community board. Participants can then “like” or respond to other members’ logs or comments.

I initially saw this as a great tool to encourage user interaction, but I didn’t see a lot of communication on these boards. It looked like many users utilize the community tool to track their own progress rather than communicating with other members. However, this was my experience with the classes I completed. Other classes and teachers may see more engagement in their community message boards.

Alo Moves vs Competitors

It can be helpful to view direct comparisons between two different yoga apps to help you know if the features fit your expectations. Here are some examples of other yoga apps and how they size up to Alo Moves.

Alo Moves Yoga vs Glo

I’ve reviewed a wide range of yoga apps and found Alo Moves and Glo to be very similar platforms. They both offer several types of fitness classes beyond yoga, an array of guided meditations, and they allow you to save favorite classes in your profile. Glo is slightly more expensive than Alo Moves, costing $23.99 monthly and $244.99 annually.

Glo offers live classes, which may be one of the main reasons for the higher price tag and the higher rating of 5 out of 5 stars from our independent review. Live classes can bring an exciting vibe to an at-home practice. If you’re interested in trying a live class, it’s worth the extra money to choose Glo. Alo Moves may be better for those who’d rather save money and enjoy pre-recorded classes with beautiful backdrops.

Visit Glo

Alo Moves Yoga vs Down Dog

Alo Moves and Down Dog both offer yoga, but Alo Moves provides many other fitness classes on one platform, while Down Dog makes users download additional apps for other fitness classes. For example, Down Dog offers yoga and HIIT, but you must download each app separately.

A Down Dog membership costs $9.99 monthly and $59.99 annually, making it much more affordable than Alo Moves. One key difference between Down Dog and Alo Moves is the teaching method. With the Down Dog app, users view videos of a person moving through the yoga poses with a computerized voice providing the instruction. The Alo Moves teachers provide instruction while doing the yoga practice with you.

History of the Alo Moves Yoga Company

Alo was founded in 2007 and originally launched as a yoga apparel retailer. Alo is an acronym for Air, Land, and Ocean, which aligns with its eco-friendly brand. In 2017, the company launched Alo Moves to promote accessible yoga, meditation, and fitness instruction with the convenience of a mobile app. Fast Company placed Alo on their list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2021. 1

Frequently Asked Questions About the Alo Moves Yoga App

How Do I Cancel My Alo Moves Subscription?

You can cancel your Alo Moves membership through the website. Login with your email and password and go to member settings, then choose cancel membership. They note that deleting your account on the app or deleting the app will not cancel the subscription. Representatives at Alo Moves highly recommend canceling subscriptions at least 24-hours before the next billing cycle to ensure that it’s processed in time.

Does Alo Moves Offer Refunds?

Alo Moves does not offer refunds or partial credits for unused periods. To see their Terms of Service, go to their website, scroll down, and click on Terms at the bottom of the screen. Terms of Service will appear as a pop-up window.

How Do I Contact Customer Service at Alo Moves?

Alo Moves provides customer service via phone, chat, and email support for questions, concerns, and complaints.

Final Verdict

Overall, Alo Moves would be a terrific app for anyone wanting to build a yoga and mindfulness practice together, which is why it receives a high rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars from our independent review. The yoga instructors, videos, and variety of classes are all fantastic. The fact that Alo Moves dedicates so much content to mindfulness training shows they understand that yoga is much more than a workout. Members can gain a lot of benefits from learning about the relationship between the mind and the body, and utilizing the various guided meditations and breathwork exercises.

However, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Alo Moves to beginners who have never attended a yoga class in the past. The entry level classes are more geared towards those who have been exposed to yoga, but don’t consider themselves regular practitioners. I would recommend Alo Moves to those who are interested in having a more structured yoga or fitness routine and would like some instruction from high-quality videos and inspiring teachers.
