ChoosingTherapy.com is user supported. We may earn a commission if you sign up for a service through our links, at no cost to you. Our reviews and comparisons are based on independent research.

At a glance
  • Choose Grow Therapy if you have Medicaid or a dual-eligible plan, want in-person sessions, or prefer to pick a named provider before sharing any details.
  • Choose Rula if you have Original Medicare or want to know the missed-appointment fee before booking. Rula charges $99 for therapy and $150 for psychiatry. Grow lets each provider set the fee, up to $200.
  • Both cover all 50 states and DC and charge only your insurance cost share, with no subscription. Billing surprises are the top complaint theme for both.

Rula and Grow Therapy cover much of the same ground, but the signup experience is different. Both are insurance-first networks of licensed clinicians, and both offer therapy and medication management under one login. Rula works like a national virtual clinic: you enter your information, get matched with a contracted provider, and pay from one national price list. Grow works like a marketplace, so you can compare independent clinicians’ profiles, cash rates, and availability before choosing. Both bill your insurer and charge you the remaining cost share. Check which Rula providers take your plan or browse Grow’s directory for your state to compare the numbers that apply to you.

Choose Grow Therapy if

Grow covers more Medicaid options, offers in-person sessions, and lets you see named providers and prices before sharing personal details.

  • You have Medicaid or a dual-eligible plan. Grow’s checker showed a Medicaid option in nine jurisdictions. Rula lists six Medicaid carriers across roughly six states. Grow also carries two dual-eligible plans spanning 27 and 34 states plus DC. Rula says most dual-eligible plans are out of network. Rula’s Medicaid patients can see therapy providers only, while Grow publishes no equivalent restriction on booking a prescriber.
  • You want in-person sessions. Grow offers both virtual and in-person care as standard options. Rula is virtual-first. Its in-person care is limited to Kaiser Southern California and Anthem California members, who must call support to book.
  • You want to pick your own provider. Grow lets you browse provider names, specialties, cash rates, and next available dates without entering personal details. Rula asks for your date of birth, state, and insurance before showing you a curated list.
  • You are paying cash. Grow’s providers set their own rates, with a published range of $75 to $250 or more. Grow also offers a sliding scale. Separately, providers can offer charity care to cash-pay clients who have no insurance or federal health coverage and are at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. Rula charges a national rate of $150 for individual therapy and offers neither a sliding scale nor single case agreements.

Browse Grow’s directory to check your state and compare provider rates.

Choose Rula if

Rula accepts Original Medicare and TRICARE West. It also publishes one set of fees and prescribing rules for the full platform.

  • You have Original Medicare. Rula bills fee-for-service Medicare across all 50 states and DC. Grow Therapy confirmed on September 8, 2026, that it accepts Medicare and Medicare Advantage, but coverage varies by state. When we checked, Grow’s state tool showed a plain Medicare option only in Florida, so review its state list before ruling it out. For Medicare Advantage, Rula lists 39 carriers and Grow showed an option in 34 of 51 jurisdictions.
  • You want to know the missed-appointment cost before you book. Rula’s fee is fixed at $99 for therapy and $150 for psychiatry. Each Grow provider sets the fee, up to $200, so you need to check the specific provider before booking. Neither platform’s fee is covered by insurance.
  • You have TRICARE West. Rula accepts it. Grow does not yet accept TRICARE, confirmed by Grow Therapy on September 8, 2026, though it has a separate VA community care route.
  • You want the medication rules in writing. Rula publishes one platform-wide policy: psychiatry is available nationwide from age 13, ketamine is excluded, and certain stimulants are subject to state rules. Grow leaves prescribing to each clinician and says a prescription is not guaranteed at the first appointment. Message the prescriber before booking.

Check your plan with Rula to see your estimated per-session cost.

Where Rula and Grow Therapy are similar

Both operate in all 50 states and DC. Neither charges a subscription or platform fee, so you pay your insurance cost share per session. Each service checks benefits electronically before you book, but each warns that the estimate is not guaranteed. If a deductible applies, both charge that portion three to four weeks later, after the claim clears.

Rula requires a card on file. Grow does too, except for Medicaid and Kaiser clients. Both accept HSA and FSA cards and issue superbills for out-of-network sessions. Neither offers a promo code.

Rula says providers may be available as soon as tomorrow. Grow says most clients start in two days. Neither publishes an audited average, so treat those timelines as marketing claims.

Both hold A+ accredited BBB ratings, with similar complaint volumes over three years.

Cost and billing surprises

Rula says the average insured session costs $15, while Grow says $21. Both numbers are self-reported, unaudited company averages, so the $6 gap is not a reliable reason to choose one.

The cash-pay difference is larger. Rula charges a fixed national rate of $150 for individual therapy and $165 for couples or family, with no sliding scale. Grow’s providers set their own rates, with a published range of $75 to $250 or more. Grow also advertises a sliding scale and charity care. Cash-paying clients can compare prices across Grow’s providers, while Rula has one price.

The main complaint for both services is an estimate that does not match the final bill. Grow’s 2026 BBB filings include an estimate of $25 a session followed by a first charge near $140. Another complaint reports a $350 session after lower costs were quoted at assessment. Rula’s filings include a booking that showed a $0 expected copay and listed the carrier as in network. A later email said the insurer was out of network and appointments would cost $150 to $175.

This can happen because the real-time benefits check is only an estimate. Once the insurer processes the claim, any difference is charged to the card on file. Check your deductible status directly with your insurer instead of relying on either platform’s estimate.

Missed-appointment fees are another common surprise. Grow reviews repeatedly mention no-show fees of $80, $100, $140, and $150. That range reflects provider-set fees. Rula’s fee is fixed.

Psychiatry and medication management

Both let you book medication management separately or alongside therapy.

Rula sets prescribing rules across the platform. Psychiatry is available nationwide for ages 13 and up. Its policy excludes ketamine, says certain stimulants are subject to additional state regulation, and does not impose a blanket controlled-substance ban.

Grow lists prescribers by state, with hundreds of matches in larger states. Credentials include PMHNP, NP, APRN, MD, and DO. Each prescriber sets their own prescribing practices. Grow warns that a prescription is not guaranteed at the first appointment and that not every prescriber can prescribe controlled substances. To continue an existing controlled prescription, Grow recommends messaging the prescriber before booking. The platform has no built-in e-prescribing, and medication sessions cannot be booked the same day.

As of September 2026, federal telehealth rules allow DEA-registered prescribers to prescribe Schedule II to V medications remotely without a prior in-person visit through December 31, 2026.1 The rule applies equally to both services.

What users say about Rula and Grow Therapy

Grow has the higher Trustpilot score, 4.7 from 8,366 reviews compared with Rula’s 4.5 from 5,032. Grow’s one-star share is also lower, 5% compared with 9%. Both companies have replied to 98% of negative reviews. Trustpilot says neither has recently solicited reviews, so both review sets are unprompted.

Rula leads on BBB customer reviews, at 2.79 from 154 reviews compared with Grow’s 1.14 from 63. Those samples are far smaller than the Trustpilot sets and are self-selecting. Many people also reach BBB through its complaint process.

Grow reviewers like being able to choose a provider from a detailed profile and switch when the first one is not a fit. Medicaid members also value being able to filter by their exact plan. Common complaints include unanswered provider messages, refill gaps, and first appointments canceled or reassigned close to the start time. Providers run their own practices on the marketplace, so scheduling can vary.

Rula reviewers praise the therapists and the platform’s ease of use. The recurring complaints focus on billing and slow support responses. Reviewers also report provider no-shows and retroactive or batched charges arriving after months of lower bills.

If neither fits

Neither service is a good fit for a cash payer who wants a flat subscription. Neither is built solely around insurance-covered psychiatry.

If you are paying cash and want a flat weekly subscription, BetterHelp offers that, though it does not prescribe. It also bills commercial insurance at signup in all 50 states and DC, but does not take Medicaid, Medicare, or TRICARE, confirmed by BetterHelp on September 11, 2026.

If you mainly need insurance-covered psychiatry, Talkiatry is built around that service and publishes a clear controlled-substance policy. It does not take Medicaid.

For a closer look at how the platforms work day to day, read our Rula Health review and Grow Therapy review.
