At a glance
  • Talkspace takes insurance. It is in-network for therapy and psychiatry with Aetna, Cigna, Optum (UnitedHealthcare), Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, Regence, Carelon, Oscar, and TRICARE, plus many employer EAPs. Traditional Medicare covers therapy only.
  • Talkspace puts the average insured copay at $10 for therapy and $15 for psychiatry, and says most insured members pay $0.
  • Medicaid is the exception and is not accepted. Medicare covers therapy only (no psychiatry yet), and Talkspace does not accept Kaiser (confirmed September 4, 2026).

Talkspace is an online therapy and psychiatry platform with licensed therapists and prescribers.  Sessions are completed by video, audio, or messaging, and  teen therapy from age 13 is also offered. It is an in-network provider, which means it submits claims and handles billing directly with your plan rather than you to file manually. As of the end of 2025 its services were available to more than 200 million people through insurance plans, EAPs, employers, and schools.1 Universal Health Services completed its acquisition of Talkspace on August 17, 2026, and Talkspace says its in-network arrangements did not change at closing.1 Check your coverage with Talkspace, the eligibility check runs on your Member ID and takes a few minutes.

As of August 31, 2026, from Talkspace’s insurance and coverage pages. Copays are Talkspace’s published averages; your plan sets your actual number.

Insurance can cover individual therapy, psychiatry evaluations and medication management, teen therapy for ages 13 to 17, and couples therapy on partnered plans. Whether your plan covers live video, live audio, or messaging therapy depends on the specific plan.

Aetna’s page carries the line “Not all plan sponsors have elected Talkspace as a covered service”, so having Aetna does not guarantee coverage. And some Cigna plans may require a referral from your primary care doctor first.

What you pay with insurance

Talkspace’s published averages are $10 per therapy session and $15 for psychiatry. While most insured members have a copay of $0, they can still be charged in three situations:

  • A card stays on file even with insurance, because copays, coinsurance, or deductible amounts can still come due.
  • On a high-deductible plan, the deductible applies first. Until you meet it, each session bills at your plan’s contracted rate. Your copay applies only after the deductible is met.
  • Any remaining balance is billed weeks later. Talkspace charges your copay shortly after the session, then invoices the rest once your insurer processes the claim. Talkspace itself says it cannot confirm final out-of-pocket costs before that happens.

In HelpGuide’s August 2026 survey of Talkspace users, 78 percent paid through insurance and nearly a third of insured users had a $0 copay.2

What Talkspace costs without insurance

Self-pay therapy runs $69 a week for messaging only, $99 a week adding four monthly 30-minute video sessions, or $109 a week adding workshops, with extra live sessions at $69 each. Teen therapy prices are $69 to $99 a week and couples therapy is $109 a week for the couple. Psychiatry is $299 for the initial evaluation and $175 per follow-up, with a $435 bundle covering the evaluation plus one follow-up (confirmed September 4, 2026) and a $475 three-session follow-up pack for existing members. Quarterly or biannual billing saves 10 to 20 percent, and Talkspace issues superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. It also accepts HSA and FSA cards (confirmed September 4, 2026). Our Talkspace cost guide breaks the tiers down further.

Does Talkspace accept Medicare?

Yes, but for therapy only. Talkspace’s Medicare page says virtual therapy is covered for traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage members in all 50 states and DC. Members may need to pay coinsurance and Medigap to cover the rest. The same page lists the average Medicare member copay as $0. Psychiatry is not covered yet under Medicare. Per Talkspace, psychiatry and medication management may be covered by Medicare “at a later date”. The specific Medicare Advantage plans that participate vary by plan, so run yours through the checker or call the number on your Medicare card. For program-level questions, Talkspace points members to Medicare.gov.

Does Talkspace take Medicaid?

No. Talkspace does not accept Medicaid, including Medi-Cal in California. If you have Medicaid and want to have it cover therapy, two alternatives accept it in parts of the country. Grow Therapy works with 125+ plans including Medicaid in select states, and Rula accepts Medicaid in many states. If you would rather stay with Talkspace, you would pay the self-pay prices above.

How to check if your plan covers Talkspace

  1. Open Talkspace’s insurance checker and pick your plan from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your Member ID from your insurance card. The system confirms eligibility and your cost share within minutes. HelpGuide’s testers note it works even without creating an account.
  3. Talkspace also runs through many employer and school EAPs as prepaid session credits. Registering takes your organization’s name, an EAP authorization code, or an authorization letter from your benefits provider.
  4. When using a plan with a deductible, call your insurer and ask if behavioral health benefit start at a copay, or after the deductible.

Talkspace vs using your insurance the traditional way

An insurance card can book you a local therapist or psychiatrist through your plan’s directory. A 2023 study sampling 948 psychiatrists in five states found 18.5 percent available to new patients. There was a median 67-day wait for an in-person appointment and 43 days for telepsychiatry.3 When Senate Finance Committee secret shoppers worked plan directories in 2023, callers booked an appointment less than one time in five, and a third of the listings were wrong numbers, unreachable, or inaccurate.4

The directory gives you in-person care and a therapist you choose and keep. Kaiser members book covered video visits with Kaiser’s own clinicians through kp.org. If a local, long-term provider matters more than starting this week, use the directory since it can take more time.

What insured members report

Talkspace holds a 4.4 Trustpilot rating across 2,373 reviews.5 The most common complaints are about billing. Common issues are charges continuing after cancellation, refund refusals after canceled trials, and trouble applying EAP codes. Its BBB profile is A+ and has been accredited since 2017. BBB also has complaints about session credits expiring month to month and providers leaving without notice.6 HelpGuide’s reviewer verified therapy coverage in minutes but could not get psychiatry coverage verified despite submitting documentation.9  If you want psychiatry covered by insurance, confirm that benefit before the evaluation. Our Talkspace review covers what happens after the coverage question, with insurance and without.
