What Is Emotional Constipation?
Emotional constipation happens over time when an individual becomes unable to communicate their emotions or needs. Simply put, emotional constipation is the build-up of emotions or feelings.
Repressing emotions is the same as emotional constipation in that it occurs when a person consciously or subconsciously cannot verbalize feelings or needs. Repression differs from suppression in that repression can be learned or is the result of a traumatic experience that an individual does not wish to experience or feel.
Emotional Constipation Causes
It is believed that certain populations repress emotions to avoid or prevent undesirable feelings. Previous studies of emotional respondents have found that women are more emotionally expressive than men.1 This is a social construct that makes it more acceptable for women/girls to express emotion than men. However, it remains unclear whether men and women differ in other domains of emotional response.
Individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder experience emotional constipation as a means to avoid reliving previous unwanted experiences or feelings. It has been noted that during traumatic exposures, many persons appear to use automated control processes characterized by cognitive dissociation that seem to assist in functioning during traumatic events.2
Individuals with a fear of intimacy may also become emotionally constipated. A 2022 study found that individuals have two distinct motivational systems: prevention and promotion. Prevention-focused individuals are mainly motivated to avoid potential costs, whereas promotion-focused individuals are generally driven to achieve potential rewards.3 Intimacy opens the door to emotional availability, and being emotionally unavailable prevents individuals from feelings of hurt and disappointment. Repressing these feelings denies individuals to be their authentic selves and contributes to pent-up anger. Anger is not the only symptom that emotional constipation causes. Emotional constipation can manifest in many other ways.
Emotional Constipation Symptoms
Typically, when individuals have unprocessed emotions they experience increased levels of stress and anxiety. Emotional constipation can present in many forms physically and emotionally.

Headaches
Individuals who experience stress may also suffer from headaches. Stress-headaches can be a physiological effect of the repression of emotions or emotional constipation. Headaches are physically and mentally debilitating and can impact an individual’s work and personal life.
Feeling Numb
When people avoid emotional expression they also begin to become desensitized to most emotions and begin to feel numb. Feeling numb protects the individual from expressing or experiencing the emotion leading to detachment.

When an individual is unable to express or communicate feelings, it can lead to feelings of sadness or unworthiness, which can lead to depression. Depression is a mood disorder that can affect not only expression but other day-to-day functioning.

These individuals have usually learned this as a form of protection.
